CECAFA U-23 Challenge Cup: Uganda stand in Eritrea’s way in ranking match

Eritrea will battle Uganda in a 5th/6th place classification game today at the on-going CECAFA U-23 Challenge Cup in Bahir Dar, Ethiopia.

Mekonnen Zewde Abraha, the Eritrea head coach said playing their fourth game in the tournament is good for the players to get more playing time. “Although we are not in the final this event has been very helpful to us for players to play at the top level,” said the coach.

The Eritrean team started the campign with a 3-3 draw against hosts Ethiopia, before they suffered a 3-0 defeat to Burundi. Coach Mekonnen’s team went on to defeat Ethiopia in the classification match 3-2 in penalty shoot outs after the game had ended 1-1 after 90 minutes.

In their last meeting Uganda beat Eritrea 3-0 during the final of the 2019 CECAFA Senior Challenge Cup.

Ethiopia will also face guest side Democratic Republic of Congo in a 7th/8th classification match, while the finals and play-off for 3rd/4th will be played on July 30th.
