Eritrea finish 6th in CECAFA U-23 tourney
Eritrea have finished 6th in the regional CECAFA U-23 Challenge Cup on-going in Bahir Dar, Ethiopia.
Coach Abraha Zewde Mekonnen’s team lost 2-1 to Uganda in a 5th/6th classification match played at the Bahir Dar Stadium on Wednesday.
Najib Yiga and Steven Mukwala netted for Uganda, before Yonathan Goytom scored at the stroke of full time for Eritrea. In their last meeting Uganda beat Eritrea 3-0 in the final of the 2019 CECAFA Senior Challenge Cup.
“I am happy that my players have got the much needed exposure in this tournament where we played four matches,” said Eritrea’s coach Mekonnen after the match.
Eritrea started the tournament with a 3-3 draw against hosts Ethiopia, and later lost 3-0 to Burundi. They defeated Ethiopia 3-2 in penalty shoot outs after a 1-1 draw in normal time during a classification match and lost 2-1 to finish 6th yesterday.
The 3rd/4th playoff between South Sudan and Kenya will be played today, while Tanzania battle Burundi in the final on Friday.
