Eritrea battle table leaders Uganda in CECAFA U-17 Women’s Challenge Cup

Eritrea will hope to play a better game when they face Uganda in their third match of the CECAFA U-17 Womn’s Challenge Cup on Friday.

The women’s teams started with 5-0 defeat to Tanzania on Monday before battling to 1-1 draw against Kenya on Wednesday.

Mekonnen Zewde, Eritrea’s coach made it clear that they are enjoying the tournament because the team is getting the exposure. “We are here to get the experience because it is very important when building a team,” added the coach.

Uganda who beat Burundi 4-0 in their opening match and followed with a 11-0 victory against Djibouti currently top the table standing with six points, while Kenya and Tanzania have four points each.

On Wednesday Burundi and Tanzania battled to a 3-3 draw, while Kenya and Eritrea also drew 1-1.

The FIFA sponsored tournament being played on a round robin basis now sees Uganda top the table with six points since they also won their opening match 4-0 against Burundi.

Nicholas Musonye, the Secretary General of the East and central Africa Football Associations (CECAFA) said he is pleased with the level of play among the young women.

The inaugural tournament has attracted Uganda, Kenya, Tanzania, Burundi, Eritrea and Djibouti.
