Eritrea set to face hosts Ethiopia in regional CECAFA U-23 Challenge Cup

The national U-23 team will open their campaign against hosts Ethiopia on July 18th at the CECAFA U-23 Challenge Cup kicks-off in Bahir Dar.

In the draw conducted on Tuesday Eritrea, Ethiopia and Burundi have been placed in Pool B. Eritrea will play their second match in the Pool against Burundi on July 21st.

The competition which opens the 2021 season for CECAFA will have Uganda battle guest side Democratic Republic of Congo in the play the opening match in Pool A. Tanzania who will only arrive on July 18th are the other team in Pool A.

Djibouti, South Sudan and Kenya are placed in Pool C. Auka Gecheo, the Executive Director of the Council of East and Central Africa Football Association (CECAFA) said the tournament will run from July 18-31st.

The best top teams in each of the groups will automatically qualify for the semi finals, while the best runner up from any of the three groups also gets to the last four. While the team that is classified in 9th position after the group stage will not play more games, the other teams classified 5th to 8th will also play in a mini contest to determine the rankings.

The semi finals will be played on July 28th, while the finals take centre stage on July 31st. All the matches will be played at the Bahir Dar Stadium.
