FIFA to hold 70th Congress online due to COVID-19 pandemic
The 70th FIFA Congress will now take place as an online event on September 18th, 2020.
Initially the event was slated for June 5th in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, but the impact of the Coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic has forced the world football body to announce on Tuesday that the event will be held online.
“Following a thorough assessment of the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic and the subsequent recommendations made by the FIFA-Confederations COVID-19 Working Group, the Bureau of the FIFA Council has taken the following decisions in relation to FIFA events… to hold the 70th FIFA Congress, which was originally due to take place in Addis Ababa, as an online event on 18 September 2020,” the statement reads.
FIFA also announced that further details on the body’s events in 2020 will be communicated in due course.
Africa comprises 54 member Associations including Eritrea.
