Impressive Tekle voted 2019 CECAFA Senior Challenge Cup Best Player

Eritrea’s captain Robel Michael Tekle was voted the Best player as the 2019 CECAFA Senior Challenge Cup concluded on Thursday.

Tekle who played a pivotal role helped Eritrea reach the final of the regional tournament for the first time.

Hosts Uganda defeated Eritrea 3-0 in the final to win the trophy for a record 15th time, while Kenya beat Tanzania 1-0 to win the bronze medal.

“I am very happy that I received this award and I thank my teammates for the good team work which has seen us reach this far and win silver for the first time,” said Tekle.

Uganda Cranes also bagged the Fair Play Award, while Charles Lukwago the Uganda Cranes goalkeeper was voted Best goalkeeper. Kenya’s striker Oscar Wamalwa with three goals was the top scorer of the tournament.

Nicholas Musonye, the Secretary General of the Council of East and Central African Football Associations (CECAFA) said the competition was very competitive and showed that several teams have improved. “Seeing Eritrea reach the final and other teams like Somalia and Djibouti is an indication that there is improvement,” added Musonye.

The regional tournament attracted nine teams; Uganda, Kenya, Tanzania, Burundi, Sudan, Djibouti, Somalia, Eritrea and Zanzibar.
